FORTNIGHTLY ROUNDUP

Keep taking the tablets, put an Iceberg on it, and come back in two weeks’ time.

How are you feeling this fortnight? You know… in yourself?

There’s a distinctly medical flavour to our content this issue, with stories on meetings about blood and marrow transplants, rheumatism, cystic fibrosis, critical emergency medicine, haematology, haemophilia and stem cells. There are even two opinions on the future of medical meetings as a whole: a double dose, so to speak.

It may be hard to swallow it all in one go, but matron assures me you’ll feel much better for it in the morning.

In issue 37 of Business Events World and on The IcebergFeatures (click the right arrow) dissects significant medical meeting wins for both Frankfurt and Liverpool.

In News (also clicking the right arrow) the award-winning SIAARTI Academy for critical emergency medicine returns to Lampedusa. Kuala Lumpur will host a haemophilia congress in 2020. You’ll also find the Exhibitions Day Congress meeting on Capitol Hill, and Destinations International’s new Hall of Fame inductees. Expansions of the San Diego and Cairns convention centres have passed votes, plans to expand Milwaukee’s Wisconsin have also been unveiled, and ground has been broken on Oklahoma City’s new venue as well. Marketing Cheshire is offering associations “Brilliant Science”, the UK meetings sector was worth £18.1 billion in 2017, association meetings around the world continue to increase in number but decrease in size, and for the second year in a a row South Korea has been named top destination by the Union of International Associations.

There’s still more on The Iceberg itself (click View all News). A big stem cell meeting has been held in Melbourne, and the Darwin Convention Centre is celebrating its tenth anniversary. Sydney has won the 2019 World Forum for Foreign Direct Investment and for the first time staged the LAUNCH Festival for startups. Six US cities are vying for the 2020 Democratic National Convention, and a huge haematology congress just brought 11,000 to Stockholm.

In Opinions (still clicking the right arrow!) you’ll find Karen Kotowski of the Events Industry Council on event impact, “The Real FarmVille” at the Huntington Convention Center of Cleveland, two views on medical meetings from the recent PCMA Education Conference held there, two more on meat-free menus, how to hold sustainable meetings, seven fears to face in transforming your events, Meetings Professionals International’s World Education Congress in Indianapolis, and an interesting story of gender and the power of conferences heard recently on BBC Radio.

Plus… a great friend of The Iceberg, Pádraic Gilligan, is calling for the incentive sector to take part in the new Incentive Travel Industry Index.

Until your next appointment…

Robert Coren, Curator of The Iceberg
