Impact of AIDS 2014 Conference Still Resonates Today

In 2014 the 20th International AIDS Conference was held in Melbourne, which to this day is still the largest health conference ever held here. Ten-years down the track we are still talking about it.

Thinking back to then and the global spotlight on Melbourne with more than 13,000 delegates, visitors and media in town for AIDS 2014, the legacies of AIDS 2014 went far beyond the media coverage and economic impacts.

It’s clear AIDS 2014 created real change – among many things, new legislation to decriminalise the transmission of HIV, the Melbourne Declaration and the AIDS 2014 Legacy Statement. It mobilised community groups and fostered community education.

As a city, we pride ourselves on our reputation as Australia’s knowledge capital and innovation hub – a place that brings the world’s greatest minds together to inspire, innovate and deliver big impact.
