FORTNIGHTLY ROUNDUP

The #MEET4IMPACT Project: a legacy framework for association conferences.

The Iceberg and Business Events World both exist to celebrate the legacies meetings leave behind. So how intrigued are we to hear via our partner Boardroom about the #MEET4IMPACT Project? Initiated by Caravelle Strategies and founder Geneviève Leclerc, along with other players, #MEET4IMPACT will create a framework for legacy and promote generating, managing and measuring the positive societal impacts of association conferences. Read about it in Features below.

Also new in Features, the space congress wins of Dubai’s Mohammed bin Rashid Space Centre, and the venues and events serving London’s venture capital tech investment boom.

In News this issue, IMEX has named “imagination” as its event theme for 2019. The upcoming Meetings Africa is set to be the greenest ever. The largest international scientific meeting ever held in Estonia has been named “Conference of the Year” by the country’s convention bureau. A UK arms fair has been moved from the NEC Birmingham after a protest. The tourism, trade and investment agency for Cape Town and the Western Cape in South Africa has hosted a meeting around the potential (no pun intended) of medical cannabis.

In other convention bureau / destination News, Wonderful Copenhagen has been named the world’s first Green Tourism Organisation. Dubai World Trade Centre has secured bids to host ten new global congresses. Convention bureaux alliance Lausanne Montreux Congress won sixteen events in its first full year of operation. London and Paris are collaborating on incentive products. Academics have slammed proposed cuts that could see an 89 percent drop in Edinburgh’s marketing budget over the next two years and the closure of its conference ambassador programme.

Also in News, the Professional Convention Management Association is expanding education and outreach throughout Europe, and Olympia London has received planning permission for a £1 billion renovation.

In Opinions, there’s a fifth Boardroom and Global Association Hubs Partnership interview addressing association globalisation. This time it’s another Iceberg partner, the International Congress and Convention Association, spreading its wings in Dubai. Paul Vallee of Iceberg partners BestCities Global Alliance and GainingEdge discusses partnership in associations. Those same two partners just published the research paper Universal Accessibility in Meetings, and one of its case studies, the True Colours Festival in Singapore, gets a profile.

Also in Opinions, Lausanne Montreux Congress’s two tourism directors are talking future plans. There’s a look at business events legacy across South Africa and the wider continent. Read about every planner’s worst nightmare: multiple beeping suspect packages interrupting a high-level banking conference! And in Vienna, industry legend Christian Mutschlechner has passed leadership of the city’s convention bureau after 27 years over to Christian Woronka.

The latest edition of partner UFI’s always-useful Global Exhibition Barometer has been posted in Research.

Finally, The Iceberg reiterates its call for you to join our Global Ambassador Program. You can also visit Call for Ambassadors 2019 & 2020 to find out more.

Until the next time…

Robert Coren, Curator of The Iceberg
